Infection Prevention following Total Knee Replacement

July 26, 2015

The devastating complication of deep infection following Total Knee Replacement was the subject of a review article in the Journal of the American Academy in June of this year. Factors that increase the infection risk were high-lighted and Obesity, Diabetes, Rheumatoid disease and malnutrition continue to be prominent risk factors.  Likewise the importance of the operating room environment, the limitation of numbers of people within the operating room and the importance of appropriate timely antibiotic administration were discussed. In the post-operative period, the management of indwelling urinary catheters, blood loss and wound ooze all influence the outcome. It makes an excellent read!
