Knee Replacement

May 8, 2015

This recent meeting was very valuable, highlighting the difficulty of managing infection following total knee replacement. The importance of appropriate sampling and good communication with microbiology colleagues was highlighted. The issue of 1 versus 2 stage revision for infection was debated. Also how the Bio-Psycho-Social aspects of patient selection and patient preparation prior to knee replacement surgery were also discussed. Certainly the importance of realistic expectations and pre-operative education are becoming more important to achieve a good outcome for patients. Up to 10% of patients can be dissatisfied following surgery, so all potential complications need to be discussed preoperatively.
