The paper highlights that meniscal tears of often seen on MRI scan of asymptomatic knees, so it is imperative not to jump to conclusions, just because a tear was seen on a scan. 

While the surgery is typically very successful in carefully selected patients, the predictors of a negative outcome after surgery include females, a torn outer (or lateral) cartilage, a cartilage tear that necessitated > 50% of the cartilage to be removed, patient who are over-weight or obese, knees with previous articular cartilage damage or knees that are either unstable or malaligned.
